--Plans Aggressive Effort to Market its SMS-to-TV Technology in the US
Prominent UK interactive TV specialist, Two Way TV, has appointed Duncan Campbell as head of US sales, as part of what it says will be an aggressive effort to market its Simcast SMS-to-TV technology in the States (note: the Simcast platform, which Two Way TV acquired through its purchase of the company of the same name in 2004, is used by such companies as ITV, Turner, Optimistic and iPlay in the UK, Star TV Asia, Hong Kong's ATV, and SKY New Zealand). "The US market is waking up to the revenue-generating potential of text-to-TV technology, following its successful use in US shows like 'Deal or No Deal' and 'American Idol,'" Two Way TV CEO, Jean de Fougerolles, said in a prepared statement. "With the fast-growing use of our cutting-edge Simcast text-to-TV technology in Europe and Asia, it makes absolute sense that we cross the Atlantic and conquer the growing market over there."
Campbell has around 18 years of experience in TV production, telecommunications, and digital media. According to Two Way TV, he has been closely involved in the development of large-scale, cross-network digital media initiatives, including interactive TV and wireless deployments, from concept and creation through to development and broadcast. Most recently, he worked as a senior consultant to GSN, a channel that has pioneered interactive and participation TV in the US, serving as an executive producer for the creation and launch of its participation TV show, "PlayMania." According to Two Way TV, he played a key role in evolving GSN's new media strategies and their impact on affiliate and advertising sales. Prior to his stint at GSN, he held senior management positions at GoldPocket Interactive (now part of Tandberg Television), developing and managing interactive TV formats for over 20 TV networks and channels. His management roles at GoldPocket included SVP of its advertising arm, GoldPocket OneMedia (which he also co-founded), VP of business development, head of programming and production, and executive producer. In 2000, he opened GoldPocket's Los Angeles office, which later became the company's national headquarters (the company was previously headquartered in the Boston area). According to Two Way TV, his business development and account management efforts generated over 60% of GoldPocket's annual revenues in the company's first five years: accounts he managed included those of NBC, Fox, HBO, The WB, GSN, CNN, TBS, TNT, Bravo and Comedy Central. Prior to his stint at GoldPocket, Campbell was a TV producer for around 12 years, working at CNN (where he produced the high-profile shows, "Larry King Live" and "Crossfire"), Warner Bros. Television, Fox News, and Scripps. "I have been very impressed with the technology developed by Two Way TV, which has the double whammy of leading mobile-to-TV technology coupled with an award winning creative team--something which I feel no current US company can boast about," Campbell said in a prepared statement. "Simcast is already attracting a lot of interest here in the US, so watch this space."
