Comcast appears set to launch a user-generated content site, called Ziddio, that will have a companion VOD service. A press release announcing the new site appeared on the Business Wire PR service last week, but has since been removed–presumably because the service is not yet ready to launch. However, the press release can be accessed using Google’s cache feature, and more information on the new site can also be found on an FAQ on Comcast’s Web site.
According to the press release, Comcast tapped Southern California-based interactive agency, Genex, to design and build the new site, which it says will offer "users the chance to win high-profile prizes and national distribution of their original content" on its companion cable VOD service (which will also be called Ziddio). "Along with eight different categories of content open for submission," the release continues, "current users have the chance to submit video of their messy home in conjunction with a contest sponsored by The Style Network’s ‘Clean House,’ to win a chance to have their home featured on the show. A new ‘Star Wars’-themed contest allows users to submit videos that correspond to classic trivia about the film for a chance to win an all expense paid trip to the Kennedy Space Center." The release goes on to state that Ziddio will encourage visitors to "create, view, and share independently produced, original video content driven by cross promotions with unique, well-known brands" and that the site has strategic partnerships in place with HBO, Cinemax, The Style Network, Lucas Films and other major content providers.
