MobiTV Names Kay Johansson CTO

Mobile TV company, MobiTV, has named Kay Johansson CTO. Johansson joins the company from Popwire, a former Ericsson company in Sweden, where he served as CTO for the past six years, leading licensing, product strategy and development of mobile and broadcast media applications and technologies (note: Popwire's customers include Apple, ABC, MTV, the BBC, the CTIA, Ericsson, Microsoft, Vodafone and 3). According to MobiTV, while at Popwire, Johansson and his team were instrumental in designing an end-to-end media streaming infrastructure that is the core of Ericsson's media delivery system: in 2000, Popwire and Ericsson launched the first official television broadcast over a 3G network. Johansson is co-inventor of two Popwire patents for streaming and bandwidth-adaptation techniques over wireless networks, which, according to MobiTV, were instrumental in the delivery of a standards-based 3GPP media player for mobile phones and PC's. Johansson has relocated to California, and will report to MobiTV chairman and CEO, Philip Alvelda. "Kay clearly understands the mobile video landscape and has the vision to expand MobiTV's technology and infrastructure base across all of the latest networks," Alvelda said in a prepared statement. "Kay's experience working with leading carriers, mobile equipment manufacturers and personal computing companies is the perfect fuel for the next generation of products that will drive MobiTV's business." MobiTV claims that its service--which features content from such providers as MSNBC, ABC News Now, CNN, Fox News, Fox Sports, ESPN 3GTV, NBC Mobile, CNBC, The Discovery Channel, TLC and The Weather Channel--has over a million paying subscribers. It is available in the US through Sprint, Cingular and Alltel; in the UK through 3 and Orange UK; in Canada through Bell Canada, Rogers and TELUS Mobility; and in Latin America through America Movil. It can also be accessed on laptops via the AT&T Broadband network.
