Sampo in Deal to Integrate Oregan's Browser into IP-Connected LCD TV's

UK-based embedded software vendor, Oregan Networks, has signed a licensing agreement with Taiwan-based Sampo, a manufacturer of flat-panel TV sets which supplies its products to retail consumer electronics brands, such as Sharp, and which also offers products under its own brand in the US and Taiwanese markets. The deal will see Sampo integrating the Oregan Media Browser into its next generation of IP-connected LCD TV's (note: according to Oregan, the Media Browser consists of three modules: a TV browser, an IPTV client, and a DLNA player and server; the company claims that the solution is based on a highly integrated architecture which allows service providers to deploy multiple entertainment functionalities via a single embedded software stack, enabling delivery of interactive video, music and live data services via a Web-based user interface, and the distribution of downloaded content to multiple client devices on the network).

According to Oregan, the incorporation of its browser technology will enable the Sampo TV sets to offer "multiple media entertainment and content sourcing options," including the ability to access broadband video content from the Internet and the ability to access photos, music and movies stored on networked PC's, home gateways and NAS devices. "In order to stay competitive, Sampo needs to offer more than High Definition readiness in its LCD TV products," Tom Chen, general manager of Sampo Digital R&D, said in a prepared statement. "IP connectivity will soon become a part of the everyday experience on a wide range of consumer electronics, including TV's. Sampo has selected Oregan's Media Browser based not only on the sophistication and maturity of its TV browsing software, but also due to completeness of its media client solution, allowing us to incorporate Web VOD and DMA [Digital Media Adaptor] functionalities into the higher-end range of products." Added Tony Yang, Oregan's Taiwan business manager: "We are pleased to be working with Sampo on their line of sophisticated LCD TV's, enabling enhanced Internet services and usability through an XHTML and Macromedia Flash-based unified user interface. Features , such as advertising-driven content surfing, Internet Electronic Programming Guides, recommendation engines and IP telephony, delivered through Oregan's solution, will enable Sampo and its customers to effortlessly design branded Web entertainment into the TV experience."
