Blip.tv, a company that provides tools and a platform for publishing videoblogs, has closed a Series A funding round. According to the company, which has not disclosed how much it raised in the round, the round was over-subscribed and funded exclusively by private investors. Blip.tv, which claims to host "tens of thousands" of videoblogs from around the world, allows videobloggers who use its service to opt-in to video advertising and splits the resulting revenues with them. It also provides them with tools to distribute videos to their own blogs, to other Web sites, to video aggregators and search engines, and to iTunes, del.icio.us, Flickr and other service. The company says that it allows users of its service to maintain complete ownership of their content, and that it supports Creative Commons licensing. "Blip.tv is creating the tools that will empower the next generation of TV stars and producers to work for themselves," Blip.tv CEO, Mike Hudack, said in a prepared statement. "With this round of funding complete, we will now focus on giving our users more opportunities to make money from their hard work. We will soon offer additional advertising options and introduce pay-per-download and subscription services. We are also launching into new areas of development, expanding our services and growing our distribution network to connect our users to the world through all possible media channels." Blip.tv claims to have already executed a number of private-label software licensing deals with media companies, enabling the latter to attract, collect and manage user-generated content. The company also offers design, hosting and software-integration services.
