UK-based mobile technology and content applications developer, ROK Entertainment Group, has acquired mobile content creation and delivery company, Fonedream. The latter, which was founded in January, 2000, has supply agreements in place with a number of wireless service providers, including Virgin Mobile, Vodafone Live! and Orange, as well as with Jamster, AOL and other companies. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. As a result of the deal, Fonedream, which has 10 full-time staff and draws on a roster of 30 creative contractors, will be renamed ROK Media; its founder, Graham Baines, will continue as CEO. "Graham has amassed a real pool of talent over the past few years, and with that talent he has developed some fantastic applications which we are delighted to add to our ever-growing product portfolio," ROK chairman and CEO, Jonathan Kendrick, said in a prepared statement. "Graham's team at ROK Media will be a creative 'skunk works' going forward, with a broad brief to create ever-more dynamic and appropriate content-delivery applications based upon the question 'wouldn't it be great if…' when considering new ideas for technologies." ROK--which has developed a number of content-delivery applications and services over the past two years (including a system for delivering 2.5G mobile TV over GPRS and Wi Fi; DRM-protected content-loaded memory cards; and a place-shifting set-top box, called BLCX, which delivers end-users' home TV service to their mobiles over the Internet)--says that it is expanding its strategic focus from exclusively developing new products, in order to put a greater emphasis on the marketing of those products in the UK and internationally. The company says that it will announce several "major new applications" over the course of the coming year.
