The UK's largest commercial broadcaster, the Independent Television Network (note: the latter is generally referred to in the UK by the acronym, "ITV"), has launched a "skill-with-prizes" World Cup soccer quiz game, accessed via its interactive TV service on the Sky satellite platform. The game, which was co-developed by OpenTV's games subsidiary, PlayJam, and by games and gaming software company, JPM Interactive, invites viewers to answer a series of questions not only on the World Cup, but also on science and nature, show business and pop music: each time they answer correctly, they get to pass a ball to another team member, gaining points as they go. Each goal scored gives the player a point bonus: more goals lead to greater prizes, and ultimately a jackpot. The size of the jackpot depends on the number of viewers playing the game at the time, though the maximum jackpot is £50 per game. To progress to the jackpot more quickly, players can take advantage of bonus cards: a "substitute" card lets them change the question category; a "long pass" card decreases the number of questions that have to be answered before a goal can be scored; and a "tackle" card gives a player the choice of not answering a question set by the opposition. The game is based on JPM Interactive's patent-pending Gameology system, which tracks players' progress throughout each game, so that content and questions can be adapted to each player's skill level.
