Telkonet, a company that specializes in providing in-building broadband access over existing electrical wiring, and its subsidiary, wireless broadband provider, NuVisions (note: the companies specialize in serving large buildings in New York City), have begun deploying an IPTV service to beta customers in New York City. According to the companies, the service, which is part of a triple-play offering, is delivered over a Wi Fi network that NuVisions terms its "virtual fiber optic network in the air," a redundant gigabit ring in New York, which connects various buildings to which the company provides broadband access. While the service currently offers a limited line-up of linear TV channels, the companies say that it will eventually offer a full multichannel service, VOD, network PVR, Internet-over-the TV, games and other interactive TV content: subscribers will be provided with wireless keyboards which they will be able to use to surf the Internet, shop at neighborhood and national retailers, and communicate with building services. "We are excited to be the first provider of IPTV services in the New York City market, bridging the gap between the television and computer as entertainment, information and communication devices," NuVisions president, Frank Matarazzo, said in a prepared statement. "With this new IPTV offering, the new age of digital convergence is upon us."
