Brightcove Begins Free, Open Commercial Preview of its Service

Brightcove, a company that specializes in enabling video content providers–ranging from independent producers and small businesses to major media companies–to build broadband TV channels and distribute their video through the Internet, has begun a free, open commercial preview of the "standard" version of its Flash-based service. "Internet TV has tremendous momentum in the marketplace today, and we’re seeing a wide range of content owners and creators quickly moving into broadband programming and distribution," Adam Berrey, Brightcove’s VP of marketing and strategy, said in a prepared statement. "By opening our commercial preview, we’re giving anyone who wants to become a broadband programmer the ability to start using the services they need to publish and distribute their video on the Internet today."

Brightcove is planning a full commercial release of what it calls its "Standard Services" (i.e. services targeted at individuals and small businesses) this summer: it says that, concurrent with that launch, it will announce a range of service plans, including plans that require payment for usage of the services and plans that allow broadband programmers to use the services free of charge, and also generate revenue for themselves, by participating in an advertising network or offering videos for sale or rental. Brightcove also offers "Premium Services" which have been commercially available to "selected" customers since the beginning of 2006. Those services are targeted at large media companies and major brand marketers, and are currently being used by a line-up of companies that includes Discovery, National Lampoon and Oxygen.

Late last year, Brightcove raised $16.2 million in a Series B funding round; appointed Barry Diller to its board of directors; and announced a deal with AOL (the largest investor in the funding round), which will give video publishers who use Brightcove’s services the option of syndicating their video content directly to AOL.com.
