At the NCTA National Show earlier this month, Showtime demo’d an OCAP-based interactive TV application, designed to allow viewers to subscribe to its premium programming service. The self-provisioning app, which was developed by DigiSoft, a Cork, Ireland-based provider of technologies for developing, deploying and managing interactive TV applications, was running on an OCAP-enabled high-definition television set from Samsung. The app is designed to be seen only by non-Showtime subscribers, and allows them to access information on packaging, pricing, incentives for subscribing, and more. "This application drives revenue by enabling impulse purchases during free previews like the one Showtime just offered to a record 45 million households," Judith Pless, SVP of Showtime’s Digital Media Group, said in a prepared statement. "Viewers can subscribe to Showtime with a click of their remote. This application allows them to upgrade instantly and eliminates costly calls to the operator’s call center. We’re focused on developing innovative ways to deliver new Showtime subscribers to our distributors more easily and efficiently, similar to our Emmy-award-winning virtual channel, which has already successfully added over 100,000 subscribers since it was introduced."
