Red Bee Media (note: the company, which was formerly a BBC business unit called BBC Broadcast, was recently sold to Creative Broadcast Services, a company 65% owned by Macquarie Capital Alliance Group and 35% owned by Macquarie Bank) has launched a "one-stop" service, called "Digital Hive," which is designed to enable content owners, rights holders and distributors to get their content on new platforms, including mobile, VOD, broadband and video iPods. According to the company, the Digital Hive service will, among other things, provide advice on how to get consumers to pay for content on new platforms, and help with negotiating agreements with platform owners. Red Bee says that it will charge a low fee for ingest or offer rights holders the opportunity to participate with it in revenue-sharing arrangements, thus decreasing their risk. It says it will digitize content at its London-based broadcast center, store it on a central server, and manipulate it and reformat it for different platforms and screens, drawing on its "knowledge of what consumers will watch and pay for." "People are rapidly changing the way they consume content, bringing a multitude of ways for rights owners to make more money from their content and exploit new revenue models," Red Bee CEO, Pam Masters, said in a prepared statement. "Most of the debate so far has been about what technology consumers will use to access content on new platforms. Technology issues will sort themselves out; the key is to make content engaging for consumers. Only Red Bee Media’s knowledge of audiences coupled with its technology and creative talent can bring these aspects together. What’s the purpose of re-formatting content if no one’s going to watch it?"
