Time Warner Cable has provided an update on its deployment of Start Over, a free service which allows the operator’s digital customers to restart TV shows that are already in progress (note: it does not allow them to fast-forward through commercials), and which is powered in part by technologies that were developed under the auspices of the MSO’s now-defunct headend-driven PVR project, MystroTV (note: the service also employs Concurrent’s Real-Time Catcher and BigBand’s Broadband Multimedia Router technologies, as well as digital video editing and processing technology from Canberra, Australia-based Mediaware). Following an initial deployment to 10,000 customers in Irmo, South Carolina (see [itvt] Issue 6.39 Part 2), a community in Time Warner Cable’s Columbia, SC system, the service has now been rolled out to 50,000 digital customers on that system. Now that the Columbia roll-out is complete, the MSO has begun running ads to promote the service, which can currently be used with programming from 60 networks and channels.
Time Warner Cable claims that the response to the new service has been very positive: in its first month of use–when it was available to 18,000 customers–70% of those customers used the service, and Start Over users accessed an average of 10 Start Over streams during that period. "The initial customer reaction to Start Over is even more positive than it was for VOD during the initial years of its deployment," a Time Warner Cable spokesperson told [itvt] in an email.
