NBC Adds Interactivity to “Deal or No Deal”

US broadcast network, NBC, last month offered an interactive TV game on the Web and mobiles to accompany the internationally popular Endemol "briefcase" gameshow, "Deal or No Deal," during its week-long US debut (December 19th-23rd). The app, dubbed "Lucky Case Game," was promoted and explained at several points in the show: viewers playing the game on mobiles were asked to text their case choice to the shortcode, "59595," while viewers playing the game on NBC’s Web site, were also asked to pick a case number. Then, all the viewers who correctly selected the lucky case were pooled together and a winner chosen at random. The lucky case was revealed and the winner announced at the end of the show: three winners were chosen each night (one for the Eastern and Central US time zones, and one each for the Mountain and Pacific time zones) and received $10,000 each. Viewers could play the game free of charge on NBC’s Web site, but were charged $0.49 for each time they played it on their mobiles.
