China Telecom Selects UTStarcom’s mVision for New IPTV Service

Alameda, Calif.-based UTStarcom says that China’s largest fixed-line telco, China Telecom, has chosen its mVision end-to-end IPTV system to support a new IPTV service that it intends to launch by the end of the year, starting with a 5,000-subscriber deployment in Shanghai. The service will feature content aggregated by the Shanghai Media Group. The mVision platform–which supports a variety of advanced interactive services, including network PVR and VOD (both of which will be offered by China Telecom)–is also used by Japan’s Softbank Broadband to power its BBTV IPTV service. In a prepared statement on the China Telecom deployment, UTStarcom China’s president and CEO, Ying Wu, conceded that the company does not "expect revenue associated with this agreement to be meaningful in the near term," but said that the deployment "represents a significant opportunity over the next several years."
