New Emmy to Recognize Original Programming for Non-TV Viewing Platforms

The New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced plans for a new Emmy award category that will recognize original programming created specifically for non-TV viewing platforms, such as computers, mobile phones, and PDA's. (Note: the National Television Academy is one of two organizations behind the US television industry's annual Emmy Awards--the other is the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Both organizations have, for some time now, given out Emmy Awards for interactive television; the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' ITV Emmys are for creative achievement while the National Television Academy's Emmys are technology-focused.) The Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Content for Non-Traditional Delivery Platforms, as the new award will be called, will be judged by a panel of media professionals and will reward creativity in editorial content and video production. It will initially be presented at the 27th Annual Sports Emmy Awards on May 1st, 2006 and will subsequently also be presented during the Daytime Emmy, News & Documentary Emmy, and Business & Financial Reporting Emmy ceremonies.

Entries for the new award must have been created specifically for broadband or mobile platforms (i.e. they cannot be content that was originally produced for TV and that has been repurposed for a new-media platform), and must not exceed 20 minutes in length. Eligible content would include video blogs, Web site programs, mobisodes, and broadband VOD programs. Entries will only be accepted on DVD. According to the National Television Academy, the new award was proposed by its National Awards Committee during the latter's October meeting, and subsequently approved by its Board of Trustees "in response to the burgeoning number of individuals and companies announcing plans to produce original programming" for non-TV platforms.
