TiVo Featured in US Patent and Trademark Office Museum
DVR vendor/service provider, TiVo, is being showcased as part of an exhibit at the US Patent and Trademark Office Museum in Alexandria, Virginia. Entitled "The Invention Machine: A Day in My Life," the exhibit is intended to celebrate inventions that impact and improve people’s daily lives. The exhibit’s TiVo display consists of a three- dimensional virtual diorama portraying a living room decorated with TiVo logos and icons; on the living room’s TV set, a video loop plays that highlights the benefits of TiVo’s "Time Warp" patent (US #6,233,389), which describes methods for recording one program while playing back another, and for watching a show as it is recording, as well as a storage format that supports "trick-play" capabilities, such as pause-live-TV, fast-forward, rewind, instant replays, and slow motion. (Note: TiVo has sued satellite TV provider, EchoStar, for infringing upon the patent: that case, which was filed in January, 2004, is scheduled to be heard later this year.) The video loop also highlights other patented elements of TiVo’s DVR box and service, including its interface and its remote control. The USPTO Museum was designed and built by Invent Now, a non-profit organization formed to recognize and encourage invention and creativity. The new exhibit opened July 13th.
